The Ukonga Initiative

How we Safeguard Children in the Ukonga Ward

In response to the urgent need to protect children from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) in the Ukonga Ward, Dar es Salaam, we launched a comprehensive project in 2023. Working closely with the Ukonga Ward Executive Office, our initiative began with a series of community dialogues and school visits to address the issue at hand.

As a result of these engagements, the Ukonga Ward leadership has allocated office space within the ward administration building. This designated area will serve as a sanctuary for victims and their families, offering vital Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) through professional counseling services.

The Project’s Objectives:

  • Address escalating cases of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) affecting children in the Ukonga Ward.

  • Establish a safe and supportive environment for victims and their families, providing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) through professional counseling services.

  • Foster community-driven responses and initiatives aimed at safeguarding the rights and well-being of children.

We are staunch advocates for the prevention of child abuse, firmly believing that every individual has a role to play in protecting children. By raising awareness, promoting education, and fostering a culture of vigilance, we strive to empower communities to recognize and respond to signs of abuse effectively. We believe that through collaborative efforts and proactive interventions, we can create safe environments where children can thrive without fear of exploitation or harm.
